All manuscripts must conform to the most recent MLA Handbook guidelines, with in-text parenthetical documentation and a list of works cited. In addition, all manuscripts should be typed with size 12 font, 1 inch margins, and double-spacing. Informational footnotes should be kept to a minimum. Though we do not maintain formal length requirements, the editors recommend that all manuscripts remain within the range of 20–32 pages, including footnotes and works cited. Novel reserves the right to return submissions that do not meet these specifications.

Manuscripts should be submitted both electronically and by hard copy, along with a cover letter containing all relevant contact information (e-mail, mailing address). Electronic copies of the manuscript and cover letter should be sent in PDF format to novel.forum@duke.edu. One hard copy of the manuscript and cover letter should be sent to Novel: A Forum on Fiction, Department of English, Duke University, Box 90015, Durham, NC 27708-0015.

All submissions received will be acknowledged via e-mail upon arrival, and all official correspondence regarding the editors' decisions will also be sent by e-mail. Please keep us apprised of any anticipated changes of address or contact information.

Novel's three-stage review process typically takes 12–16 weeks, allowing time for processing by the editorial staff and for initial editorial review, evaluation by external specialist readers in relevant fields, and, finally, the Editorial Board's consideration. Novel does not return or reconsider rejected manuscripts.

Individual Access Instructions

To activate online access, please follow these instructions:

1. Visit dukejournals.org/subscriptions.
2. Under the “Activation” header, click “Individuals and Society Members: Activate your online access.”
3. Enter your customer number. You can find your customer number on the mailing label of the journal or on the renewal notice. If you are unable to find your customer number, please contact Customer Service.
4. Click “Submit,” which will produce an activation form.
5. Complete the form to activate your access to the products listed. (The e-mail address provided will be used to provide you with important information regarding electronic access.)
6. Click “Send form.”
7. You may now access Duke University Press titles at dukejournals.org. You will receive a confirmation e-mail at the e-mail address you provided.

Institutional Access Instructions

1. Visit dukejournals.org/subscriptions.
2. Under the “Activation” header, click “Institutions: Activate your online access.”
3. Enter your institution’s customer number. (If your institution has an e-mail address on file, activation instructions with customer number included will be sent when your order is processed. If your institution has multiple customer numbers, you will receive an e-mail for each one.)
4. Click “Submit,” which will produce an activation form.
5. Complete the form to activate your access to the products listed. The e-mail address provided will be used to contact you regarding electronic access.
6. Click “Send form.”
7. Click the button at the top of the page to register your institution’s IP addresses.
8. Click “Save.”

Your institution should now have access to Duke University Press titles. You will receive a confirmation e-mail at the e-mail address provided.
