Assistant Marketing Manager, DU Press Journals Division
Main Focus
• To work closely with the Marketing Manager, supervise the day-to-day operations of the department; directly manage members of the creative/production team • To contribute to the departmental goal of supporting the mission of the press and increasing subscription and non-subscription revenue. • To contribute to the maintenance, research/development, and implementation of new infrastructure tools and processes to increase efficiency and to provide support for Journals Marketing • Represent the department on Journals-wide and Press-wide committees.

I. Department Goals and Staff Management A. Assist the Marketing Manager in the advancement of long-term plans and short-term goals of the department A1. Stay abreast of changing scholarly academic market; propose and implement marketing strategies based on changing marketing A2. Communicate with editorial offices regarding marketing opportunities—scheduled and unscheduled
B. Contribute to the design of twice-annual marketing plans B1. Develop strategies for specific journals, groups of journals, and electronic collections B2. Capture and oversee implementation of marketing plan, including assignment and scheduling of projects
C. Supervise creative/production team C1. Coordinate the day to day activities of the marketing creative/production staff on Web, collateral materials, electronic venues, exhibits programs, direct marketing, advertising, indexing, publicity, and communication with editorial offices, societies, and institutions. C2. In conjunction with the Marketing Manager, conduct annual performance reviews, set staff goals, and create development plans for individual staff members C3. Serve as information resource C4. D. Direct preparation of marketing reports and analyses D1. Manage coordination of annual marketing reports for societies and editorial offices D2. Supervise and support ongoing development of analytical reports for promotional response and individual circulation increase
E. Contribute to definition and structure of journals marketing department E1. Partner with Marketing Manager to develop and delineate accurate descriptions of job descriptions for creative/production team E2. Participate in development of necessary structural changes to the department positions based on workload, changing demands, and acquisitions E3. In collaboration with Marketing Manager, revise or craft new job descriptions, as needed, and recommend department structure with goal of planning for redundancy in skills and knowledge within department
II. Marketing Activities A. Product Development and Expansion of Marketing Program A1. Collaborate with Marketing Manager and Library Relations Manager on the development and implementation of electronic content packages
A2. Collaborate with Marketing Manager and Library Relations Manager on the exploration of new revenue streams
A3. Work closely with the Library Relations Manager on the international expansion of the journals marketing program
A4. Participate, as needed, in consortium and institutional sales
B. Materials Creation and Production B1. Serve as creative lead for the Duke Press Journals brand for journals marketing collateral material B1a. Serve as liaison with Journals Designers
B2. Take on specific marketing projects as directed by Marketing Manager or to balance department workload
B3. Create marketing copy, do initial layout of marketing piece, coordinate with design, and oversee print or distribution of marketing materials.
C. Communication and negotiation with Societies and Editorial Offices for marketing support C1. Field urgent requests for marketing materials or marketing presence for societies and editorial offices C2. Assign or implement requests for materials
D. Journals Participation in Books Seasonal Catalog D1. Research and compile information about upcoming journals special issues from editorial offices. D2. Coordinate with Books Marketing and Journals Marketing Manager to select and include journals special issues in seasonal catalogs D3. Assign and contribute to creation of marketing copy for special issues; assign and contribute to creation of marketing copy for the announcement of new journal acquisitions D4. Select, prepare, and compile artwork into appropriate format and size.
III. Infrastructure Maintenance and Development A. To maintain and develop infrastructure for the journals marketing department and journals division A1. Serve as information resource for technological infrastructure for the department and the journals division A3. Propose and initiate continued development of systems as needed to Marketing Manager A4. Participate and contribute to ongoing implementation of upgrades or new software and technology for workflow management and Web site content and marketing A5. Oversee and implement training on upgraded and/or new technology and software for Journals Marketing A5a. Duke University Press is seeking a capable and enthusiastic editorial associate to support an editor working in the humanities and social sciences. The editorial associate will be responsible for a number of essential tasks in the acquisitions process, and will be directly involved in reviewing and contracting manuscripts and preparing manuscripts for production. The candidate should possess strong communication and organizational skills and have a desire to learn the ins and outs of scholarly publishing.

Responsibilities include:
1) Assisting editor with screening manuscript proposals. 2) Maintaining editorial records. Tracking projects through the acquisition process. Prepare materials for contract approval and editorial board meetings. The ideal candidate will have:
1) A four-year college degree or equivalent experience is preferred. This position will also perform varied clerical duties of a complex nature to relieve Central Administration staff of clerical and routine responsibilities and to maintain an efficient and effective operation. Work Performed
The primary responsibility of the front desk personnel is to maintain security by: - Being present at work as scheduled - Greeting all guests and visitors per established protocol - Maintaining awareness of all activity at the front desk and in visible Bright Leaf Square common areas
Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail and documents independently per established guidelines; receive, log and distribute packages and forward misdirected mail as necessary.
Assist the Central Administration team with arrangements of meetings and events; setup meeting rooms, purchase and organize. Assist Central Administration staff including the Central Administration Manager, Assistant Manager, and Human Resources Assistant with routine reports, copying, filing and database entry. Assist Logistics Coordinator with assembling small furniture, stocking and taking inventory of general supplies and restroom supplies; breaking down boxes, basic copier supplies and maintenance.
Answer and route telephone calls per established protocol
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
