The object of the American Dialect Society, as stated in its constitution, is "the study of the English language in North America, together with other languages influencing it or influenced by it." The monograph series Publication of the American Dialect Society (PADS) publishes works by ADS members in regional dialects, social dialects, occupational vocabulary, place-names, usage, non-English dialects, new words, proverbial sayings, and the literary use of dialect. Models for these kinds of studies may be found in issues of PADS.
PADS is available as an annual supplement to American Speech subscriptions or as a separate book. To order a back issue of PADS ($20), please click on "Books" above, then click on "Advanced Search," and search by title. For a complete list of available issues of PADS, click here.
