Abstract Publishing Services

For our partner societies in science, technology, and medicine that wish to make their meeting abstracts available, Duke University Press can arrange to publish them in regular issues of the societies’ journals or as special supplements. The Press offers abstract publishing services in accordance with provisions in the society contracts. When there are no such provisions, the following guidelines apply:

A society that wishes to publish abstracts should first obtain the agreement of the journal’s editorial office. The editorial office will fill out an Abstract Publishing Services request form and send it to production@dukeupress.edu. It is imperative that planning for abstract publication begin as early as possible. We ask that the request form be submitted nine months before the scheduled publication of the issue in which the abstracts will appear. Using the details in the request form, Duke University Press will provide a cost estimate for the required work and a schedule that will meet the goals of the journal and the society.

Journal pages devoted to abstract publication are normally considered part of the journal’s volume allotment. If the sponsoring society and the editorial office agree, the pages can be counted as additional pages beyond the volume allotment and charged at the rate established for extra pages. Any extra services beyond those necessary to print the pages in the journal, such as a special index, an abstract table of contents, or a special design, will be assessed for feasibility and estimated separately.

It is the responsibility of the society to work with the editorial office and with Duke University Press to provide materials in the required formats, on an agreed schedule, and in compliance with the journal’s style.

Other charges may apply, depending on contractual provisions and requested services. These include, but are not limited to, charges to produce and ship extra copies of an issue for a meeting.
