  • Warehouse Clerk
    Administration Group

    Duke University Press is seeking a Warehouse Clerk to assist in the coordination and completion of receiving, picking, packing and return processes for books and other items in the Duke Press warehouse, as defined by the Team Leader or Warehouse Manager.

  • Job Description:

    I. Shipping

    • Pick and pack books and other items as specified by invoices or work orders; re-stock books to pick bins; operate order picker or lift truck to obtain books from stock locations
    • Verify all packages are packed securely for shipment as required
    • Manifest and label packages for shipment according to established routing instructions
    • Sort completed packages on pallets by customer, carrier, and/or destination; prepare pallets for LTL shipments; complete documentation required for shipments and/or inventory control
    • Sort and process mail for shipment via United States Postal Service (USPS); process & deliver shipments to Bulk Mail Center

    II. Receiving

    • Unload and receive incoming stock as necessary
    • Verify documentation provided by delivery agent is accurate regarding pallet & carton counts, and product received; verify product received is in good condition, and note any damages on delivery documents
    • Complete required documentation for receipts and/or inventory control
    • Advise supervisor immediately regarding any discrepancies or problems with a delivery

    III. Returns

    • Examine returned packages and sort returns by customer; verify that contents of the return match the paperwork; confirm that all items returned are DUP product; examine returned product to identify damaged items
    • Re-stock undamaged returned product to the designated locations; box damaged books for “hurt book” order shipment; discard damaged journals to trash
    • Complete documentation required for return order entry, accounting, and/or inventory control
    • Advise supervisor immediately regarding any discrepancies or problems with a return

    IV. Other General Duties

    • Maintain forklift license and a valid North Carolina driver license at all times
    • Operate order picker and/or forklift to perform warehouse material handling tasks
    • Use Warehouse Management System software and devices to accurately record transactions for picking, packing, shipping, counting and returns processing
    • Perform cycle counts and physical inventory counts as required
    • Complete reports and other documents as requested in a timely manner
    • Assist Warehouse Manager with supply needs, and equipment & maintenance needs as requested
    • Consistently meet established productivity guidelines
    • Advise supervisor promptly regarding any problems with equipment, supplies, and stock affecting the timely and efficient workflow of the warehouse
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Warehouse Manager or Team Leader
    • Accurately report time for Pay & Attendance purposes, using the API system in compliance with procedures established by Duke University and Duke University Press
    • Understand and commit to job expectations as described by Duke’s Standards of Conduct and
    • Performance, and Guiding Principles, and Duke Press Computing Policy
  • Education/Training

    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English and perform basic mathematical, clerical, and computer skills normally acquired through a partial high school education
    • Ability to maintain forklift licensure; ability to maintain a North Carolina Driver License
    • Must meet Duke University Criteria for Driving Duke Vehicles
  • Experience

    Six months of experience in a warehouse, shipping or mail room setting to become familiar with the basic concepts of package handling and delivery operations. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
