KBART Files and Metadata

What Are KBART Files?

KBART stands for Knowledge Base and Related Tools. The KBART initiative, commissioned by NISO and UKSG, created at set of guidelines in order to help share metadata about electronic materials between publishers, link resolvers, and libraries. The result of these guidelines was KBART files, which include full title, issn, and other information about specific publications. Duke University Press offers these files in order to help users find the most relevant journals and books to which their libraries have full text access.

As per KBART recommendations, the files are available in both .txt and in .xlxs formats. In these files, each row contains data about a specific titles, and column headers describe the data found in particular fields. This format provides quick, easily readable information about holdings.

To learn more about KBART, please visit http://www.uksg.org/kbart or http://www.niso.org/workrooms/kbart.

How Do You Use KBART Files?

KBART files are divided by e-collection. This means that each Duke University Press electronic journals and books collection has its own set of KBART files that can be downloaded. Link resolvers and librarians can download and use these files in order to update their records and holdings and ensure that end users have accurate information about accessible materials.

The following steps will get you started using your KBART files.

  1. Find the name of your e-collection below in the "Download Title Lists" section.
  2. Click on the type of format you would like, either .txt or .xlxs, to download the file.
  3. If you open a .txt file using Excel, sometimes the program will re-format date, issn or other columns with numbers. Make sure to correct the formatting as needed.
  4. From here, you are able to manipulate the KBART files or enter them into your integrated library system.

If you have any questions or notice an error in one of the KBART lists, please contact us at kbarthelp@dukeupress.edu.
