Meet the Duke University Press leadership team.

Dean Smith

Dean Smith, Director of Duke University Press since 2019, has over 30 years of extensive publishing experience, covering scholarly, STM, university press, and trade- and association-based realms. He brings a wealth of understanding in leading digital publishing initiatives, business development and acquisition skills, open-access publishing, global sales and marketing expertise, and strategic planning skills. Throughout his career, Smith has assumed diverse roles, including press director, digital platform director, journal publisher, director of electronic publishing, vice president of sales and marketing, and society publisher.

Smith is a published author, poet, and freelance journalist. In 2021, he released Baltimore Sons, his second collection of poetry, following his debut work, American Boy (2000), which is available open access. In 2013, Smith published Never Easy, Never Pretty: A Fan, A City, A Championship Season with Temple University Press. 

Smith serves as an adjunct professor of publishing in the Masters in Professional Studies program at George Washington University. One of his cherished experiences includes engaging in a public talk with the esteemed John Cleese. Send an email to Dean Smith.

Allison C. Belan

Allison C. Belan is the Director for Strategic Innovation and Services. Allison oversees the Press’s entire technology operation, including project management, product management, and IT. Allison began her career at the Press as the Journals Production Supervisor, a role that provided fast education in digital publishing practice and strategy. In 2011, Allison assumed responsibility for digital content and publishing strategy of all DUP publications, books and journals. From 2015 - 2020, she built the business information and technology services operation at the Press, comprising project and product management and IT. Tasked with driving innovation at the Press, Allison spearheaded the creation and launch of the Scholarly Publishing Collective, which offers journal hosting, sales, and fulfillment services to non-project publishers, and she now oversees the mathematics focused Project Euclid. Amy Ruth Buchanan

Amy Ruth Buchanan is the Director of Editing, Design, and Production for books and journals at the Press. She came to the Press in 1995 and spent most of her career here as an award-winning book designer and then design manager and art director for books and journals. She is responsible for the publication of journals, new books, and reprints. Her groups work collaboratively to publish all press content in various formats—print, electronic, and online—to high-quality standards of editing, design, and manufacture. Rob Dilworth

Rob Dilworth has worked in scholarly publishing for over thirty years. As Journals Director, Rob oversees the Press’s journals program and focuses on acquisitions of new titles and partnership management. He is dedicated to supporting the editorial vision of journal editors and the mission of scholarly societies and has a keen interest in sustainable economic models for publications.

Gisela Fosado

Gisela Fosado is the Editorial Director of Duke University Press and publishes books in a wide range of areas in the humanities and social sciences. She began her career at Duke University Press as Editorial Associate in 2010 and was named Editorial Director in 2020. Gisela holds an A.B. from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology and a Certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Michigan. Cason Lynley

Cason Lynley is the Director of Marketing, Sales, & Finance. She came to the Press in 1999 and, during that time, has held six different positions at the Press. The Marketing, Sales, & Finance department supports the Press’s overall mission of wide dissemination of scholarly books and journals while sustaining the long-term financial viability of the Press. Cason has served on the education, career development, audit, and annual program committees for the Society for Scholarly Publishing for many years, including serving as co-chair for the SSP Annual Meeting Program Committee for four years and SSP Audit Committee for three. Prior to her time at the Press, Cason worked for Southern Progress Corporation, publisher of Southern Living and Southern Accents magazines. She received a MA in English with an emphasis in creative writing from North Carolina State University and holds a BA in English and Religion from Wake Forest University.
