Russian Formalism was a heterogeneous assemblage of ideas, approaches, and views which generated a variety of off-spins and followers. Yet, during its centennial history, Formalism has been largely reduced to a handful of concepts and assumptions. Inspired by a series of conferences and workshops that celebrated the first 100 years of Formalism, this cluster attempts to bring back some original polyphony of this movement, while repurposing a few original tools and devices for contemporary usage. The volume is divided into three parts, devoted to the epistemological varieties of formal methods, reinterpretations of Viktor Shklovsky’s ideas and influence, and the presentation of Russian Formalism as a transnational phenomenon.
