Health Politics and Democracy

The articles in Health Politics and Democracy demonstrate both threats to and buttresses for democratic politics and policy. Across research with American, comparative, and global perspectives, contributors seek to understand welfare state retrenchment when it occurs in the form of budget cuts, reductions in the scope and generosity of programs, and the introduction of onerous administrative burdens. That health politics and policy can play central roles in both democratic erosion and democratic flourishing demonstrates the enduring significance of the questions animating this journal as well as the inaugural conference upon which this special issue is based. Now, as ever, health politics and policy scholarship remains vital, as all of the pieces that follow make clear.
