This special issue documents the work and career of Swiss director and author Milo Rau, who contributed to the recalibration of theatrical form to address issues of human rights and social justice. Using his position as a renowned postwar European stage director, Rau exposed deeply uncomfortable political truths. Over the last two decades, he traveled around the world, working on what he called a "description of this global network of capital, its nightmares and hopes, its underworld and counterculture" — a "global realism."
