Contributing to studies across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa that examine the legacies of slavery and racialized forms of discrimination based on color and ethnicity beyond the encounter with European colonialism, authors in this special issue look at how the memory of slavery and servitude differs in the Indian Ocean compared to the Atlantic world. The authors investigate how the Indian Ocean informs our existing understanding of slavery and postslavery in the modern world, as well as the role of scholars in educating the wider public about the pernicious role of slavery, postslavery, and race in the Indian Ocean region.
