Contributors to this special issue examine prescription drug spending in the United States, including policy options aimed at controlling spending and improving access for patients. The authors explore the sources of high prices for medications in the US, proposals to curb spending for and enhance access to pharmaceutical treatments, and the tradeoffs associated with such reforms. Topics covered in the issue include current prescription drug legislation in Congress, future reform directions, and lessons from other countries’ experiences.
