Taking as its point of departure Galin Tihanov’s recent book The Birth and Death of Literary Theory: Regimes of Relevance in Russia and Beyond, contributors to this special issue debate the situation of theory with regard to both its embattled translinguistic history and its contested present. The authors propose a strong defense of literary theory against reductive interpretations, foregrounding its flexibility and capacity to enable comprehension, to challenge and inspire, and to induce change.
