This special issue is devoted to characterizing and analyzing the phenomenon of the visual hybrid—a central subclass of hybrids that, although omnipresent and culturally significant, is seldom analyzed in literature as an autonomous subject of research. Contributors to this issue propose to amend that gap by endorsing a range of vantage points: linguistics, cognitive studies and philosophy of language, aesthetics and iconography, visual rhetoric, visual culture, and art.
