How to Submit a Book Proposal

Duke University Press welcomes the submission of book proposals in the areas in which we currently publish. We ask that you submit your proposal to only one editor. If your project seems better suited to another editor’s list, it will be passed along to them for consideration.

Your proposal should include:

  • A cover letter describing the project and noting its anticipated length and completion date
  • A prospectus with detailed chapter outlines
  • A CV or résumé
  • One or two sample chapters
  • Essay abstracts (for edited collections)

We  attempt to contact authors with a decision about their submission within eight weeks of receiving it. However, due to the volume of materials we receive, it can occasionally take longer for an editor to send a response. If you have not heard from us within three months, feel free to follow up via email.

Editors who are interested in seeing more materials or a full manuscript will contact you. Please do not submit your complete manuscript until an editor has invited you to do so.

To submit a book proposal for consideration, please fill out our Book Proposal Submission Form.
